- China (Green tea)
Behind the Name
Founded in 1845, Portland, Oregon is known both for its counterculture movement and environmental conscientiousness. While most chai teas have a black base, this chai goes against the grain by using green instead. Peppermint, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, vanilla bean, ginger, licorice root, cinnamon, and fennel seed are blended to form a delicious and unique tea you can sip with milk (try it with almond or hemp milk for that extra Portland twist) or straight up.
Tea Sommelier's Notes
Chai could easily be considered the national drink of India, and is vastly distinct from one brew to the next due to diverse—and endless--combinations of spices. The green tea in this chai blend is high-grown, which indicates superb quality and significant amounts of polyphenols. Other ingredients include: peppermint, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, vanilla bean, ginger, licorice root, cinnamon, and fennel seed.
In the cup: This blend is expansively aromatic. The flavor profile is sweet and full bodied, with zesty notes of cardamom, ginger and clove.
In the mood: This is Christmas in a cup. The magic of this blend is heightened for some by the addition of milk and sugar or honey. Chai simply has the capacity to delight and to calm all senses. A terrific dessert all by itself…any time of year.
In the know: As iconic coffee “houses” dot every corner in America, in India and surrounding lands, traditional “wadis” serve their particular chai blend to walk-by street traffic. Wadis can be considered mobile tea “carts.”
In the brewing vessel: 2 Tsp.(2g)/ 8 oz. water(240ml) /Temperature: Boiling: Dragon Eyes (Please see “Five Stages of Bringing Water to a Boil.”) Steep time 5–7 minutes. Can infuse up to three times with diminishing returns on the mint.
